The Weimaraner Standard

We think that the weimaraner should be a moderate size dog with the temperament and conformation appropriate for a hunting dog.  More emphasis should be put on the part reading "Above all, the dog's conformation must indicate the ability to work with great speed and endurance in the field."

Weimaraners should hunt!

Weims need to be kept busy, and are highly intelligent dogs.  This combination is not for everyone!  A weimaraner left alone will find ways to amuse itself when it has pent-up energy--or sometimes just for fun!  I once heard someone say that if you come home and find that your weim has climbed up on top of the refrigerator and eaten the roast that you left thawing and the first thing you think is "wow, I have a smart dog" then you might be a good weimaraner owner!  These dogs can be the most idiotic, most willful, stubborn, and demanding animals that you will ever meet.  And on the other hand, they can be the sweetest, most insightful, loving, intuitive, and endearing animals that you've ever owned.  A well-bred weim is a hunting, kissing, fetching, loving machine!

Weimaraners are versatile dogs in that they can hunt furred and feathered game.  They are super trackers and they also excel at swimming which makes them terrific waterfowl retrievers in warmer waters.  They are also versatile in that they excel in AKC events such as rally, obedience, and agility.  You can even do things like Schutzhund and tracking.  While all weimaraners owners need to have a sense of humor when tackling anything with their dog, they will quickly find that they literally can tackle anything with their dog!  We are constantly amazed at how quickly our dogs pick up new things, and soon understand that it is us that need to go to class!

The only thing that you can't do with your weimaraner is nothing!
